Logistic Masterplan Maasvlakte 2, Port of Rotterdam.

Project description:

Maasvlakte 2 is a 2.9 billion euro expansion in the Port of Rotterdam, resulting in an extra 1000 ha terminal area of  1.000 hectares dedicated to container handling (600 hectares), distribution facilities (200 hectares) and chemical industry (200 hectares).

The total container hinterland transport volume will grow from the present 4,3 million TEU to nearly 20 million TEU annually. This increase will ask for a system change in the hinterland transport of the Port of Rotterdam. To facilitate this system change a Logistic Masterplan Maasvlakte 2 was developed in addition to the infrastructural and spatial masterplan.

The present transport of hinterland containers is done by either truck, train or barge. For train and barge handling on-dock as well as off-dock terminals are in operation. As a basis of design for logistic masterplan for the future hinterland facilities for Maasvlakte 2 the bottlenecks in the present operation were analyzed. Scenarios for new concepts were developed in close co-operation with the terminal and hinterland transport operators. Among the proposed concepts were common rail and barge terminals as well as an inter terminal transport system to connect all elements of the container hinterland transport chain.

Functional designs were made both for the infrastructural elements and for logistic improvements in the hinterland transport chain. All required infrastructural adaptations were incorporated in the masterplan. An action plan was set up in co-operation with the operators to arrive at the required logistic improvements within the time frame defined by the development of the volume on Maasvlakte 2.
